There was a knock at the door. Upon opening my front door, I was confronted by a chap with a big box on a trolley.

“G’day mate, how are you doing today?  I have your new fridge, where would you like it?”

“Thank god. I have been suffering from small fridge syndrome for too long. You know that feeling when you cannot fit your shopping into the refrigerator on a hot day?  You squish and squash your stuff in a desperate desire to ram things onto shelves and into compartments of your fridge.”

“Sure buddy, well we have the solution in this here box.”

A Big Personality Won’t Fit into a Little Fridge

Being an expansive person with plenty of big ideas makes it real hard to live in confined spaces. Small fridge syndrome frustrates storing the resultant fare from a day’s cooking. Where is a poor boy to store a couple of dozen sweet muffins on a summer’s day? The calamitous mission to fit Tupperware into shallow shelves is a frustrating affair. Cursing the day, I was born, I break off cheap Chinese-made fridge fittings in my bid to insert the container. Whole shelves crack and split in two right before my eyes.

Somethings Are Better When Bigger

Why did I buy this small fridge in the first place? Frugal habits and more mobility, I can fit these smaller fridges in the back of my hatch. What is saved today will cost me much more down the track. Will I ever learn? Ahead of me awaits hours of frustrating forays into tiny spaces with unwieldy items. The grind and cold comfort of small fridge syndrome. A big appetite for life is not best served by the modest receptacle.

“Well mate, where do you want this fridge?”

I am returned to the here and now, with the spell of past pains broken. The big fridge I hope will fit through the front door. Fitting things in, will this aspect of life ever leave me alone? A large refrigerator comes with added responsibilities. More mass means a requirement for greater space. Height, width and depth to be considered. A delivery fee on top of the ticket price. The handling of fridges and the exchanging of prime position in the kitchen for a place in the garage. I look forward to less frustration in my culinary life. I imagine my newfound relationship with an appliance more fit to meet my requirements. Small fridge syndrome will be consigned to nightmare and distant memory. My hand reaches out and accidentally caresses the surface of refrigerator. A cool clean experience at the beginning of a new journey together. The gentle hum of engine beneath a stainless steel exterior.
